Staff Machine Learning Engineer(platform - Identity)

Coinbase operates as a cryptocurrency exchange and platform that enables users to buy, sell, and manage digital assets while adhering to regulatory standards. In the Staff Machine Learning Engineer role on the Identity Verification team, you will lead the end‑to‑end machine‑learning pipeline that validates user identities during sign‑up, account recovery, and high‑risk transactions. Daily work includes designing and improving document authenticity models, face‑match and liveness detectors, deep‑fake and presentation‑attack detection systems, and building graph‑neural‑network models that cluster related accounts to uncover synthetic‑identity fraud. You will also develop behavioral and device‑intelligence models for real‑time anomaly detection, benchmark external ML vendors, and create evaluation layers that prevent regressions. The position requires mentoring senior engineers, collaborating with Risk and ML Platform teams, and translating KYC/AML requirements into technical roadmaps. Ideal candidates have extensive production ML experience, strong expertise in computer vision, GNNs, or sequence models, and a track record of deploying scalable systems in identity or fraud‑prevention domains.
