Affirm is a financial technology company that provides transparent, installment-based payment solutions for consumers. This Senior Software Engineer role focuses on cost engineering and capacity modeling, ensuring the platform can reliably handle high-traffic periods like major sales events. Day-to-day responsibilities include leading engineering initiatives, collaborating with product and analytics teams to navigate technical constraints, and managing the availability of system artifacts through monitoring and on-call support. You will also be expected to mentor junior team members, set high standards for code quality, and drive technical planning for complex, scalable systems. This role is well-suited for an experienced backend engineer with a strong background in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and performance tuning. The ideal candidate has proven expertise in Python or Kotlin, experience with AWS and Kubernetes, and a track record of managing compute-heavy workloads during peak traffic scenarios.

They build and maintain statistical capacity models that map traffic inputs (e.g., checkout volume, app opens, batch/job activity) to resource outputs (CPU, memory, connections) and then convert those forecasts into recommended capacity settings such as pod counts, HPA ranges, and/or infrastructure sizing changes across regions and environments.
