About the Role Staff Backend Engineer on GitLab's Core DevOps team providing technical leadership, guiding modernization of monolith, setting standards. Responsibilities Lead technical design and delivery of backend initiatives across teams. Drive modular backend, service, data, platform architecture. Define and improve standards for APIs, contracts, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, maintainability. Establish patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, service maturity, operational documentation. Establish Go service patterns and Kubernetes practices; guide Rust adoption. Participate in on‑call and incident response, act as escalation point. Partner with product and engineering leadership on roadmap decisions. Mentor senior and intermediate engineers, reduce technical debt, build reusable patterns, lead AI‑assisted workflow adoption. Requirements Record of leading technical work across multiple teams or product areas. Deep backend architecture and production experience with complex applications. Proficiency in Go and Rust. Experience with Kubernetes. Strong API design and standards knowledge. Experience with observability, performance, security, incident management. Ability to work in all‑remote asynchronous environment.
