As a Staff Software Engineer for the Maps Services team, you will be responsible for shaping the technical direction of the company's shared geospatial platform. Your day-to-day work will involve building and scaling data ingestion and processing pipelines, modeling map data, and developing APIs that serve as foundational infrastructure for various internal product teams. You will be tasked with consolidating fragmented geospatial solutions into a unified, scalable platform while working on complex challenges like map matching, routing, and real-time spatial computation. This role is well-suited for an experienced engineer with a background in large-scale distributed systems who enjoys technical leadership, mentoring others, and collaborating across teams to build reusable software platforms. Who we are Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale. Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term. About the role Maps are part of nearly everything Samsara builds. Vehicles, routes, sites, assets, and safety workflows all depend on knowing where things are and how the physical world fits together. The Maps team is building the shared geospatial platform that makes that possible. We source, ingest, enrich, and serve the map data that Samsara's product teams use every day: from road networks and points of interest to addresses, boundaries, and customer-specific map context. Our customers are the engineers building products for millions of workers and the businesses that depend on them. When our data and APIs are accurate, reliable, and easy to use, every team building location-aware experiences at Samsara moves faster. We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to help set the technical direction for this platform. You'll work across the geospatial stack: building data ingestion and processing pipelines, modeling and serving map data, improving map matching and routing foundations, and creating APIs that make spatial capabilities reusable across Samsara. It's a small team with broad ownership, and the systems you build will become foundational infrastructure for teams across the company. This role is remote and open to candidates based in the US. You might be a good fit if: You enjoy working with internal and external customers to iterate and build software platforms You care about what Samsara does. The software we build helps keep grocery shelves stocked, lights on, and workers safe on the job. You work with urgency and think through the best solutions for the opportunities, requirements, and scale in front of you. You work well with others. We move faster when we move together. In this role, you'll: Shape the technical direction of the Maps teams Build geospatial systems and integrations that support foundational features across most Samsara products. Scale our offerings to continue to support storage, query and computational load of the real-time features dependent on them Consolidate existing team-specific geospatial solutions into scalable platform-wide offerings. Build agentic solutions that allow our customers to self-serve the data they want to see how they want to see it. Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship Partner with engineering leadership on the bets worth making, and be honest about tradeoffs Represent Samsara externally when it makes sense — talks, open source, community engagement with the mapping/geospatial ecosystem Live out our cultural principles: Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, and Win as a Team Minimum requirements: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role Strong programming and design fundamentals 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams Nice to have: Experience with GIS technologies and spatial analysis, including PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas/Shapely, QGIS, and geospatial data validation Familiarity with geospatial data formats and open mapping ecosystems, including GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap (OSM), and OSM PBF; experience ingesting, transforming, validating, or serving these datasets Comfort working in ambiguity and getting teams aligned without needing formal authority The compensation range shown spans approved pay zones for this role.
