full-timeManager, Software Engineering (identity)
Affirm · Remote UK
Affirm is a financial technology company focused on providing transparent payment solutions that allow consumers to pay for purchases over time. The Identity team is a critical component of this infrastructure, managing the verification processes that occur during the customer checkout experience. As a Manager of Software Engineering for the Identity team, you will lead a group of engineers responsible for KYC, user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning for markets outside of North America. Your day-to-day work involves setting technical strategy, managing multi-quarter roadmaps, and overseeing the development of systems that balance regulatory compliance with user conversion. You will be expected to mentor your team, provide technical guidance on architecture and system reliability, and collaborate closely with product, design, and analytics departments. This role is well-suited for an experienced engineering leader with a background in consumer-facing software who thrives in ambiguous, cross-functional environments. You should have a proven ability to drive large-scale technical initiatives, such as re-platforming or system decoupling, while maintaining high standards for software quality and operational performance.
At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most. About the Engineering team The Engineering team builds systems that power Affirm’s mission. We take pride in our craft, building reliable, performant, and scalable solutions that touch every part of the business. Whether we’re enabling new ways to pay, ensuring our platforms can scale to the most demanding levels in the industry, or developing seamless servicing experiences, our focus is on solving complex problems through exceptional engineering. About the role Affirm’s Identity team is mission-critical to the customer checkout experience. When a customer chooses Affirm, one of the first steps is an identity check, and our ability to make the right decision directly impacts conversion, revenue, fraud exposure, and regulatory compliance. Our team owns Identity for all markets outside North America, playing a key role in Affirm’s international expansion. We are responsible for KYC, user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning across multiple regulatory environments. As an Engineering Manager on our team, you’ll help shape how Affirm adapts its core Identity platform to new market dynamics, customer expectations, and compliance requirements. What you’ll do You will lead and grow a well-balanced team of engineers – setting clear expectations, giving direct feedback, and developing each engineer toward their next level. You will own the team’s technical strategy and multi-quarter roadmap, tying it to major experience initiatives that build customer trust and move Affirm’s business, including large-scale redesigns and structural improvements to the identity verification journey. You will empower your tech lead and engineers to hold the design and quality bar, supporting them hands-on throughout technical design and cross-functional alignment. You will own the availability, reliability, and performance of consumer-critical systems – on-call, incident response, and reducing operational toil. You will drive alignment across multiple organizations and influence roadmaps on partner experience and foundational teams. You will partner across Product, Design, and Analytics, and other Engineering teams, building trust and taking part in cross-functional efforts. What we look for You have 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing and growing engineering teams. You have proven experience delivering consumer-facing software and driving execution through ambiguity. You have the technical judgment required to guide architecture, quality, and reliability decisions, with the instinct to empower senior engineers to make the calls rather than making them all yourself. You have experience leading significant technical initiatives end-to-end, ideally decoupling or re-platforming consumer-facing systems within clear time constraints. You have a calm, decisive presence through change and ambiguity – building alignment, resolving tensions, and leading others through complex decisions. You are a humble, team-first leader who builds a high-trust, psychologically safe culture, while also prioritizing your own growth. You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance customer needs, business goals, and technical constraints. You exhibit exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and organizational influence skills. You have a proven ability to build alignment and drive outcomes in complex environments without direct authority. This position requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
