Cloudflare operates a global network that secures and accelerates Internet traffic for customers ranging from individual bloggers to large enterprises. The MCP Portals team provides a centralized, Zero‑Trust gateway that lets AI agents connect safely to internal and third‑party services. As a Systems Engineer on this team you will design, build, and run the distributed services that authenticate users, manage OAuth credentials and sessions, enforce access policies, and proxy MCP traffic across Cloudflare’s edge. Day‑to‑day work includes writing backend code in languages such as TypeScript, Go or Rust, improving reliability, scalability and latency of multi‑tenant systems, adding observability through logs, metrics and traces, and participating in incident response. You will collaborate with product, security and engineering partners to turn customer needs and evolving standards into tested features. The role suits engineers with experience operating production distributed systems, strong systems‑level programming skills, a grasp of HTTP/APIs and proxy concepts, and comfort debugging live services using telemetry and customer evidence.

About the Role Cloudflare is seeking a Systems Engineer intern for the MCP Portals team to build and operate distributed systems that authenticate users, manage OAuth credentials, enforce Zero Trust policies, and proxy traffic across Cloudflare's global network. Responsibilities Design, build, and operate globally distributed services connecting MCP clients to upstream servers. Evolve implementations as the MCP specification changes. Build secure authentication and authorization flows using Cloudflare Access, OAuth, and identity management. Improve reliability, scalability, latency, and resource efficiency of multi‑tenant systems. Develop observability through structured logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, and alerts. Participate in production support, incident response, and customer issue investigation. Collaborate with product, security, and engineering partners to deliver well‑tested capabilities. Requirements Experience building and operating reliable distributed, backend, or network services in production. Strong programming skills in TypeScript, JavaScript, Go, Rust, C++ or similar systems‑oriented languages. Solid understanding of HTTP, APIs, proxies, streaming connections, and distributed‑systems failure modes. Experience debugging production systems using logs, metrics, traces, and error reporting. Ability to reason about security boundaries, credential handling, concurrency, state management, and backward‑compatible deployments. Clear written and verbal communication skills.
